Life can be busy, hectic and chaotic at times. As an active parent chances are you juggle kids, housework, finances, work, hobbies and some social life on a daily or weekly basis. Fitting everything in can be time consuming and exhausting. Over time this can lead to burnout and stress, and life can feel tedious and difficult. If one of your aims for 2018 is to be happier and more carefree, then there are steps you can take to simplify your life and embrace a more calm and peaceful existence.
It doesn’t take long for items to accumulate in your home. Before you know it, every drawer you open is full of junk, wardrobes are bursting with clothes you never wear, and the house feels a mess. Spend some time each month going through everything and throwing away or donating items that are no longer needed or used. Invest in some sound household storage systems, baskets and bins to go in cupboards and on shelves and drawer dividers to go in drawers to help you to keep your possessions neat and organised. You could have a huge sort out at the start of the year, and then the following months it will be easier to keep on top of. The same goes for your paperwork and your email inbox. Have a major cleanout now, to try and keep on top of it for the year.
Get In Control of Laundry
One of the biggest jobs in most households is keeping on top of laundry. With every member of the family going through an outfit a day, on top of gym clothes, PE kits, hobby clothes, bedding and more (even more so if you have a young baby) it adds up to a huge amount of washing. Buy a hamper which separates lights, darks and colours and gets everyone to put their laundry in the right place. Aim to use the washing machine more often instead of letting it build up since it will be easier to keep on top of things. Don’t make more work for yourself, only iron items that need ironing. Often using the tumble dryer and then hanging things up removes creases. You could also buy a steamer to steam items which would make things quicker and easier. Once children are old enough, make it their responsibility to hang and fold their clothes and put them away to save you an additional job. For items that need particular attention, find dry cleaners which offer dry cleaning lockers. That way you can drop off dry cleaning at any time of the day or night even when they’re not open, making it more convenient for you.
Do a Little Each Day
Instead of letting the household generate mess and having one big cleaning day each week, do a small amount each day. A quick once-over with the vacuum, a wipe down of the sides, bleach in sinks and toilets and a quick pick up of any toys and mess needn't take more than fifteen minutes. You’ll keep the house ticking over and save yourself time when you do come to clean properly.
